Pool Deck Repair in Houston, TX

Silverheels Construction repairs and resurfaces the concrete deck around Houston pools β€” cracks, spalling, settled and uneven slabs, and failed paver decks. We work on the deck, not the pool: the water, interior finish, and equipment are a separate scope. We find why the concrete moved before resurfacing over it. Free estimates.

Pool deck repair in Houston is concrete work on the hardest-worked slab on the property β€” flat, in full sun, soaked constantly, and sitting on the same expansive clay that moves everything else here. The deck around a pool cracks, spalls, settles out of level, and, where it's pavers, lifts and separates as the base washes out underneath. We repair and resurface pool decks across the Houston area, and we draw a clear line: this page is the concrete and stone around the pool, not the pool's interior finish. Repairing a deck well starts with figuring out why it moved, because resurfacing over a slab that's still settling just cracks the new surface too.

What we repair on a pool deck

  • Surface resurfacing β€” overlays and micro-toppings over a sound but worn, stained, or dated concrete deck
  • Crack repair β€” routing and filling cracks, and addressing the movement behind the ones that keep coming back
  • Spall repair β€” rebuilding areas where the surface has flaked and popped from sun, pool chemistry, and weathering
  • Leveling β€” addressing settled slabs and trip-hazard joints where sections have dropped
  • Paver decks β€” resetting lifted and sunken pavers, rebuilding the base, and re-sanding joints
  • Coping transitions β€” the edge where the deck meets the pool, where cracking and separation are common

The deck takes abuse nothing else on the property does β€” standing water, pool chemistry splashing out, bare feet, furniture, and relentless sun. Most of what fails is either the surface wearing out or the slab moving underneath, and those are two different repairs.

Why the slab moved β€” and why that comes first

Houston's expansive clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries, and a pool deck sits in the worst possible spot for it: constantly wet on one side, baked dry on the other. That differential is why pool decks here crack and settle more than ordinary patios. Add a base that was under-compacted when the deck was poured, or soil that's been washing out from under one edge, and sections drop, tilt toward or away from the pool, and open cracks at the stress points.

Resurfacing over a deck that's still moving is money wasted β€” the new overlay telegraphs the old crack within a season, because the crack is the slab talking, not the surface. So before we resurface we look at why the concrete moved: whether it's settled on a washed-out or poorly compacted base, whether drainage is sending water under the slab, and whether the cracks are stable or still working. We fix the cause we can reach, stabilize or replace sections that are past saving, and resurface over concrete that's going to hold still.

Resurfacing versus replacing

Not every tired deck needs to come out. A deck that's structurally sound but worn, stained, slippery, or just dated is a good candidate for resurfacing β€” a cementitious overlay or micro-topping bonded over the existing slab, finished with texture for slip resistance and color to update the look. It's far less invasive and less expensive than demolition and a new pour.

A deck that's badly cracked from movement, spalled through, or settled so far out of level that it holds water or tilts the wrong way is past resurfacing in those areas β€” the failed sections get removed and replaced, and the rest can be resurfaced to match. We tell you honestly which camp your deck is in. Pouring an overlay over a slab that needed replacement just hides the problem until it cracks through, and we won't sell you that.

Paver pool decks

Paver decks fail at the base, not the pavers. When a paver deck lifts, sinks, or goes wavy, the pavers themselves are usually fine β€” it's the compacted base underneath that's washed out, settled, or was never built right, and the joint sand that's eroded away. We pull the affected area, rebuild and recompact the base, reset the pavers true, and re-sand the joints so they lock back together. Where edge restraint has failed and the field is spreading, we address that too, because pavers with nothing holding the perimeter will keep migrating. A paver deck is the one pool surface that can usually be taken apart and put back rather than demolished, which is part of why people choose it.

What pool deck repair costs in Houston

Pool deck work is priced by the condition and the material, and we don't quote a project total without seeing it β€” but the material ranges give you the shape of it. Concrete overlay and resurfacing material runs roughly $2 to $12 per square foot, depending on the system β€” a basic micro-topping at the low end, a stamped or multi-layer decorative overlay at the high end. Stone pavers run roughly $8 to $25 per square foot installed, depending on the stone and how much base rebuild the job needs.

Those are material-and-type ranges, not a project total. What moves the final number: how much of the deck is resurfaced versus removed and replaced, how much slab leveling and base rebuild is involved, the finish and color you choose, and access to the deck for materials and equipment. We give you a real number after we've looked at the deck and found out why it moved.

What's not in our scope

We work on the deck. The pool's interior finish β€” plaster, quartz, pebble, or tile β€” is a separate job, covered on our pool resurfacing page. And the pool's mechanical systems are not ours: pumps, filters, underwater lighting, controls, water-supply and fill lines, and heaters are electrical and plumbing scope we don't take on, and those go to the trades that own them. We'll tell you where that line falls on your project so the parts that aren't ours are planned for rather than discovered mid-job.

Frequently asked questions

How much does pool deck repair cost in Houston?

It's priced by condition and material, so we quote after seeing the deck. As a guide, concrete overlay and resurfacing material runs roughly $2 to $12 per square foot depending on the system, and stone pavers run roughly $8 to $25 per square foot installed. How much gets resurfaced versus replaced, and how much leveling is involved, set the real number.

Can you resurface my pool deck instead of replacing it?

If the slab is structurally sound but worn, stained, slippery, or dated, yes β€” a bonded overlay or micro-topping refreshes it with new texture and color for far less than demolition. If it's badly cracked from movement, spalled through, or settled out of level, the failed areas get replaced and the rest resurfaced to match. We tell you which your deck needs.

My pool deck keeps cracking in the same spot β€” why?

A crack that keeps coming back is the slab moving, not the surface failing. Houston's clay swells and shrinks, and a pool deck is wet on one side and sun-baked on the other, which drives it. Resurfacing over a working crack just telegraphs it through the new surface, so we address why it's moving before we resurface.

Can you fix a settled or uneven pool deck?

Yes. We address settled and tilted slabs and the trip-hazard joints where sections have dropped, after finding out why it settled β€” usually a washed-out or under-compacted base, or drainage pushing water under the slab. Badly settled sections that hold water or tilt toward the house get removed and replaced.

Do you repair paver pool decks?

Yes. When a paver deck lifts or goes wavy, the base underneath has washed out or settled, not the pavers. We pull the affected area, rebuild and recompact the base, reset the pavers true, re-sand the joints, and fix failed edge restraint so the field stops spreading.

Do you work on the pool itself too?

The interior finish is a separate job we cover elsewhere on the site. The pool's pumps, filters, lighting, controls, water lines, and heaters are electrical and plumbing scope we don't take on, and we'll point you to the right trade for those while we handle the deck.
