Louvered Pergolas in Houston, TX

Silverheels Construction installs louvered and motorized pergolas across the Houston area β€” adjustable-louver roofs that open for breeze and close to shed rain, in aluminum or wood, attached or freestanding, on footings sized and anchored for a heavier structure. We install the structure, carpentry, footings, and anchoring; motor wiring and electrical hookup are a separate scope we don't take on. Free estimates.

A louvered pergola is the upgrade over a fixed one: a roof of adjustable slats you tilt open for airflow and dappled light, or close to throw full shade and shed rain off the patio. In Houston's heat and sudden downpours, that control is the whole point. We install louvered and motorized pergolas across the Houston area β€” aluminum and wood, attached and freestanding β€” and we're clear that the structure and anchoring are ours while the motor's electrical hookup is a separate scope.

Adjustable louvers and how they shed rain

A louvered roof is a bank of slats on a pivot. Open, they let breeze and filtered sun through like a classic pergola; closed, they overlap into a solid roof that keeps the patio dry. The good systems channel that rain into gutters integrated into the frame and carry it down through the posts, so a closed louvered roof actually drains instead of dumping off the edge.

That's the whole advantage over the alternatives: a fixed pergola is always open and a solid cover is always closed, while adjustable louvers give you both on the same structure β€” shade and airflow on a dry day, a sealed roof when a Houston storm rolls in.

Motorized and smart operation

Louvers can be operated by hand crank or by motor. A motorized louvered roof tilts the slats at the touch of a remote or wall switch, and smarter systems add app control and rain and wind sensors that close the roof automatically when the weather turns β€” genuinely useful when a Houston downpour arrives with no warning. Fully retractable louvered roofs open the slats all the way for open sky.

Our scope is the structure and the louver mechanism. The motor's electrical hookup β€” running power and wiring it in β€” is a separate scope we don't take on; we install the pergola and the louver system and set everything up ready to receive that connection.

Aluminum versus wood

Aluminum is the common choice for louvered and motorized pergolas, and for good reason: it's light, it won't rot or warp, it's powder-coated against the sun, it has the integrated gutters the rain-shedding depends on, and it's what the motorized louver systems are engineered around. It reads clean and modern and asks for little maintenance.

Wood is warmer and fully custom, but it's heavier and needs the re-staining and upkeep any wood structure does out here. For an adjustable or motorized louvered roof specifically, aluminum is usually the right call β€” we build both and will lay out the trade-off for your space.

Footings and anchoring for a heavier structure

A louvered pergola is not a light pergola. An aluminum frame carrying a motor and a roof that closes solid weighs more and, when the louvers are shut, catches wind like a sail β€” so the footings and anchoring have to be sized for real load, not the light duty an open wood pergola gets away with.

We set concrete footings sized for the posts and Houston's expansive clay and anchor the structure for the wind and weight it will actually see. On a heavier, closable roof, that foundation work is what keeps the whole thing standing straight and put through storm season.

Attached versus freestanding

An attached louvered pergola ties into the house wall or roofline and reads as an extension of the living space; it needs proper flashing and a sound attachment to the structure so water never gets into the wall at the connection. A freestanding one stands on its own posts and can go anywhere in the yard, which is often simpler where the roofline or an obstruction makes attaching awkward.

We build both. The right choice comes down to where you want the shade, how the house is built, and the look you're after β€” we'll walk the space and recommend.

Built for Houston

A louvered pergola fits Houston as well as anywhere: shade on demand against the afternoon sun, airflow when you want it, and a roof that closes up and drains when the sky opens. For a classic fixed pergola or a solid patio cover instead, see our pergola and patio cover page; to repair an existing structure, our pergola repair page.

We install louvered and retractable pergolas across the Houston area, including Jersey Village and the surrounding communities. What drives the cost is size, aluminum versus wood, manual versus motorized, attached versus freestanding, and the footings the structure needs β€” drivers, not a price.

Frequently asked questions

How does a louvered roof keep the rain out?

The slats close and overlap into a solid roof, and the good systems channel the water into gutters built into the frame and down through the posts. Open the louvers for breeze and filtered sun; close them for a dry patio in a downpour.

Do you do the motor's electrical hookup?

No. We install the structure and the louver mechanism, but running power to the motor and wiring it in is a separate electrical scope we don't take on. We set everything up ready for that connection.

Aluminum or wood for a louvered pergola?

Aluminum is the usual choice β€” light, rot-proof, powder-coated, with the integrated gutters the rain-shedding needs, and it's what the motorized systems are built around. Wood is warmer and custom but heavier and needs upkeep. We build both.

Can it be motorized or smart-controlled?

Yes β€” motorized louvers with remote or wall control, and systems with app control and rain and wind sensors that close automatically. We install the structure and mechanism; the power hookup is a separate scope.

Attached or freestanding?

Both. Attached ties into the house and extends the living space, with proper flashing at the connection; freestanding stands on its own posts and goes anywhere. It depends on your space and the house.

Does it need bigger footings than a regular pergola?

Yes. A closable louvered roof is heavier and catches more wind, so the footings and anchoring are sized for that real load and Houston's clay β€” heavier duty than an open wood pergola needs.
