How to find where a roof leak is coming from

Water runs downhill along the underside of the decking before it drips, so the wet spot on your ceiling is downhill of the real hole, not under it. Start by looking uphill of the stain.

The usual entry points, in order: penetrations first — plumbing-vent boots, the flashing around chimneys and skylights, and any spot where something pokes through the roof. Then valleys where two slopes meet. Then flashing where the roof meets a wall. Open field shingles are the least common source unless there's obvious storm damage.

The most reliable way to trace it is from inside the attic during or right after rain: follow the water trail up the decking and rafters to the highest wet point, which sits at or above the actual hole. A roof inspection from above then confirms it. If you can find that highest wet point, you've found the leak.

How to stop a roof leak temporarily

The goal is to buy time safely until it can be repaired dry. Do not get on a wet or storm-damaged roof — that's how people get hurt, and it's why emergency tarping is a service rather than a DIY job.

From inside: if water is pooling above the ceiling, relieve it (see the ceiling section below) and catch the drip. From outside, once it's safe and dry, a tarp run up over the ridge and secured is what actually stops it — a properly anchored tarp sheds water where a bucket of roof cement smeared in the rain won't.

What to do when your ceiling is leaking

First, protect what's below: move furniture and electronics, and put down a bucket and towels.

Second, relieve a bulging ceiling. Water pooling above a drywall ceiling gets heavy fast and can bring the whole section down. Put a bucket underneath and pierce the low point of the bulge with a screwdriver to let it drain in a controlled stream — a small hole you patch later beats a collapsed ceiling.

Third, stay clear of any light fixture or ceiling fan the water is near — water and fixtures don't mix, so don't touch them.
