Shed Builder in Houston, TX
Silverheels Construction builds custom sheds and small backyard structures across the Houston area β storage sheds, workshops, insulated backyard offices and studios, she sheds, and the foundations under them. We build the structure to last in Houston's heat and clay soil; utility hookups like power and water are a separate scope we don't take on. Free estimates.

The backyard shed stopped being just a place for the mower. In Houston it's now a workshop, a home office away from the kids, a studio, or a she shed β and the difference between a box that bakes and a space you actually use is insulation and how it's built. We're a custom shed builder working across the Houston area, from a straightforward storage shed to a finished, insulated backyard office, and we build the structure and its foundation. What we don't take on is running power or water to it β that's a separate scope β so we'll be clear from the start about where our work stops.
What we build
Storage sheds: from a simple garden shed to a large custom storage building, sized and styled to the yard and the deed restrictions.
Workshop sheds: built for tools and projects, with the door widths, workbenches, and layout a working shop needs.
Backyard offices and studios: insulated and finished inside so they're usable in Houston heat β a quiet space to work or create.
She sheds: finished retreats, built out to whatever the use calls for.
Custom sizes and styles: matched to your house, your yard, and your HOA.
Tiny house and ADU structures: the built shell and framing for a small accessory dwelling β see the section below on how that scope works in Houston.
Backyard offices and studios that work in the heat
A bare shed in Houston is unusable from June to September β it turns into an oven by 10 a.m. What makes a shed a space you can actually work in is an insulated shed: insulated walls, ceiling, and floor, real windows and a proper door, and a finished interior.
Insulation is what makes the difference, and it's what we build in. Keeping the space cool and powered β cooling and electrical β is a separate scope we don't take on, so that gets arranged separately, but the shell we build is designed for it: insulated, finished, and ready to be conditioned. We'll talk through what a comfortable backyard office needs before we build so it's specced right the first time.
Shed foundations
A shed is only as good as what it sits on, and Houston's clay makes the foundation the part people underestimate. Set a shed on the bare ground and it wicks moisture, the floor rots, and the doors bind within a couple of seasons as the soil moves.
We install the right foundation for the shed and the site: a compacted gravel pad for a basic storage shed, concrete piers or a pier-and-beam base for a larger or finished building, or a poured slab where the use calls for it. The foundation gets the structure up off the wet ground, keeps it level as the clay moves, and is the single biggest factor in how long the shed lasts.
Tiny houses and ADUs
A tiny house or an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a shed's more ambitious cousin, and the build is only part of the job. We build the structure and shell β the framing, roof, siding, windows, doors, insulation, and interior finish.
Two things to know going in for Houston: an occupied structure is permitted work, and the permitting for an ADU is a real process, not a formality. And the utilities that make it livable β electrical and plumbing β are a separate scope outside what we do, coordinated on their own. We're straight about that up front so the project is planned as a whole and the structure we build is designed to accept it.
Do you need a permit for a shed in Houston?
For a simple storage shed, often no. Inside the City of Houston, a small accessory building under 200 square feet that nobody occupies and that has no utilities is generally exempt from a building permit. Go over that size, add power or plumbing, or make it a space people use, and it becomes permitted work.
Two things catch people regardless of the building permit: deed restrictions and HOA architectural approval, which apply in a huge number of Houston neighborhoods and are separate from any city permit; and setback rules that govern how close to the property line the shed can sit. Outside the city, unincorporated Harris County and the smaller cities have their own thresholds. An ADU or any occupied structure is always permitted. We tell you what applies to your address before we start.
What a custom shed costs in Houston
A basic storage shed is the low end and scales up quickly with size, finish, and use. A plain gravel-pad storage shed is the least expensive; an insulated, finished backyard office costs several times as much per square foot because it's a small building, not a box β insulation, windows, a real door, and interior finish. The foundation is a real line item on top, and a tiny house or ADU structure is a different tier entirely.
What moves your number: size, insulation and interior finish, foundation type, window and door count, siding and roofing to match the house, and site access. These are ranges, not quotes β we price after seeing the yard and talking through how you'll use the space.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for a shed in Houston?
For a small storage shed under 200 square feet with no utilities that nobody occupies, usually no building permit inside the City of Houston. Larger sheds, powered or plumbed ones, and any occupied structure are permitted. Deed restrictions, HOA approval, and setback rules apply either way. We confirm what applies to your address.
Can you build a backyard office or studio I can actually work in?
Yes β insulated walls, ceiling, and floor, real windows and a door, and a finished interior, built to be comfortable in Houston heat. We build the structure ready to be conditioned; the cooling and power to run it are a separate scope we don't take on.
How much does a custom shed cost in Houston?
A basic storage shed is the low end and scales up with size, insulation, finish, and foundation. An insulated, finished backyard office costs several times more per square foot than a plain storage shed. The foundation is a separate line item. We price after seeing the site and the use.
What foundation does a shed need on Houston clay?
It depends on the shed. A compacted gravel pad works for a basic storage shed; a larger or finished building wants concrete piers or a pier-and-beam base; some uses call for a slab. The point is getting the structure up off the wet ground and keeping it level as the clay moves.
Do you build ADUs or tiny houses?
We build the structure and shell β framing, roof, siding, windows, doors, insulation, and interior finish. Permitting for an ADU is a real process, and the electrical and plumbing that make it livable are a separate scope outside what we do. We plan the project around that from the start.
Do you run power or water out to the shed?
No β that's a separate scope we don't take on. We build the structure and foundation, and design it to accept utilities, but the power and water hookups themselves get arranged separately.
