Silverheels Construction installs motorized and retractable awnings across the Houston area β€” patio awnings, deck and balcony awnings, and motorized screen and shade awnings β€” plus awning repair. We mount the awning and set its structural attachment; the electrical hookup for a motorized unit is a separate scope we don't perform. Free estimates.

A retractable awning is the most flexible way to shade a Houston patio: roll it out for the brutal afternoon sun, roll it back for open sky or ahead of a storm that would otherwise tear a fixed cover. Motorized, it does that at the touch of a button or on its own when the wind picks up. We install motorized and retractable awnings across the Houston area β€” over patios, decks, and balconies β€” and we're clear about where our scope stops: the awning and its mounting are ours, the electrical hookup is not.

Retractable awnings vs. fixed: when each makes sense

A fixed awning is always out β€” simple, sturdy, and the right call over a door or a window that just needs permanent cover. A retractable awning extends when you want shade and rolls away when you don't, which matters in Houston two ways: you get sun on a mild day, and you can retract the awning ahead of high wind or a storm so it isn't left out to be damaged.

For a patio people actually live on, retractable is usually the better fit β€” full shade in the afternoon, open sky in the evening. We install both, and help you weigh it against a permanent structure like a patio cover or pergola when that's the better answer for the space.

Motorized vs. manual crank operation

A manual awning extends and retracts on a hand crank β€” economical and dependable, with nothing to power. A motorized awning does it from a remote or a wall switch, and the better systems add a wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically when gusts cross a threshold, which is genuinely useful here where storms arrive fast.

One thing stated plainly, the same as on our louvered pergola and outdoor shade pages: we mount the awning and set its structural attachment, but the electrical hookup for a motorized unit β€” bringing power to it and wiring it in β€” is a separate scope we don't perform. We install the awning and set it up ready for that connection.

Awnings over decks and second-floor balconies

Shading a deck or a second-floor balcony is mostly about what the awning mounts to. An awning cantilevers a lot of leverage off its mounting, and in Houston wind that load is real β€” so it has to attach to solid structure: wall framing, a band or rim joist, or a header, with proper backing, never just siding or fascia.

We find and attach to the sound structure behind the surface and flash the attachment so water can't get into the wall. On a deck or balcony where there's no good wall to mount to, a freestanding or post-mounted frame is the answer, and we build that instead.

Motorized screen and shade awnings for west-facing exposure

A west-facing Houston patio takes the worst of the afternoon sun, and a motorized screen or shade awning is built for exactly that: a drop-down screen or shade panel that cuts the low, direct sun a standard overhead awning can't block, then rolls up out of sight when the sun moves off.

Motorized patio shades like these let you drop the screen for the two or three brutal hours and have the patio open the rest of the day. We install motorized screen and shade awnings on patios and openings that cook in the afternoon; as with any motorized unit, the electrical hookup is a separate scope. For fixed solar and privacy screens on a patio or pergola rather than a rolling awning, see our patio shade screens page.

Fabric, frame, and what Gulf Coast sun and humidity do to them

Houston is hard on an awning. Relentless UV fades and weakens fabric, humidity grows mildew on anything that stays damp, and sun breaks down a cheap frame finish. So the materials matter: solution-dyed acrylic or marine-grade fabric that holds its color and shrugs off mildew, and a powder-coated aluminum frame that won't rust or chalk out in a season.

We install awnings specified for this climate, and we'll tell you honestly what a given fabric and frame will and won't stand up to here, so you're not re-covering it in two years.

Awning repair: fabric, arms, rollers, and re-anchoring

An awning is a mechanism, and mechanisms wear. We repair awnings as well as install them: replacing sun-rotted or torn fabric on an otherwise good frame, fixing or replacing lateral arms and tension springs that have gone slack, servicing a roller tube or gearbox that binds, and re-anchoring an awning whose mounts have worked loose or pulled at the wall.

A loose mount is worth catching early β€” an awning that's starting to pull away from the wall is both a failure and a water-intrusion path. We re-secure it to sound structure and re-flash the attachment. Where a unit is genuinely past repair, we'll say so rather than sink money into it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do the electrical hookup for a motorized awning?

No. We mount the awning and set its structural attachment, but bringing power to a motorized unit and wiring it in is a separate scope we don't perform. We install the awning and set it up ready for that connection.

Retractable or fixed awning for a Houston patio?

For a patio people use, retractable is usually better β€” full shade in the afternoon, open sky in the evening, and the ability to retract it ahead of high wind so it isn't damaged. Fixed makes sense where you just want permanent cover over a door or window.

Can you put an awning over a deck or second-floor balcony?

Yes. The key is mounting to solid structure β€” wall framing, a rim joist, or a header with proper backing, not siding or fascia β€” and flashing the attachment so water can't get in. Where there's no good wall, we use a freestanding or post-mounted frame.

What's a motorized screen or shade awning?

A drop-down screen or shade panel that blocks the low, direct afternoon sun a standard overhead awning can't, then rolls up out of sight. It's ideal for a west-facing patio β€” drop it for the brutal hours, leave the patio open the rest of the day.

How does Houston weather affect an awning?

UV fades and weakens fabric, humidity grows mildew, and sun breaks down cheap frame finishes. We use solution-dyed acrylic or marine-grade fabric and powder-coated aluminum frames specified for this climate, and we'll tell you what a given material will stand up to.

Do you repair awnings or only install them?

We repair them too β€” replacing torn or sun-rotted fabric, fixing slack arms and tension springs, servicing a binding roller, and re-anchoring an awning whose mounts have loosened. Where a unit is past repair, we'll tell you rather than throw money at it.
