Why Houston drywall cracks the way it does

Water damage: find it first

Closing up a wall over an active leak wastes the repair and hides the damage while it keeps spreading.
On flood and storm damage, wet drywall is cut out above the water line rather than patched, because gypsum wicks water upward well past where the staining is visible. Insulation behind it usually has to come out too.
Texture matching
This is what separates a repair you can see from one you can't. Houston homes run heavy on orange peel and knockdown, and both take matching the original spray pattern and knockdown timing, not just spraying texture on and hoping. On older homes with hand-applied texture, matching takes longer.
Repairs are primed before paint. Fresh mud absorbs paint differently than the surrounding wall, so an unprimed patch flashes through the finish coat even when the texture is right.
