Outdoor Kitchen Builder in Houston, TX

Silverheels Construction builds outdoor kitchens and grill surrounds across the Houston area β€” framed islands, stone or stucco veneer, weather-resistant countertops, and the opening and clearances to drop in your grill. We build the structure and set appliances into it. Gas lines, plumbing, and electrical are a separate scope we don't take on; those connections are handled separately. Free estimates.

An outdoor kitchen turns a patio into the place everyone actually gathers, and Houston's long warm season makes it usable most of the year. The build itself is masonry and carpentry β€” a framed, veneered island built to take the weather and sized to your grill and your patio. We build outdoor kitchens and grill surrounds across the Houston area, and we're clear up front: we build the structure and set the appliances in, while the gas, water, and electrical connections are a separate scope.

Framing the island

Everything starts with the structure under the finish. An outdoor kitchen island or grill surround is built on a non-combustible frame β€” steel studs or masonry block, not wood, which rots outdoors and can't sit against a grill β€” sized to the grill and components and laid out to fit the patio and how you'll use it.

We frame the openings the build needs: the grill cutout, access doors, drawers, and space for a fridge or storage, each built to the appliance's dimensions. The frame is what the veneer, the countertop, and the appliances all attach to, so getting it square and sized right is what makes the rest go together cleanly.

Stone or stucco veneer

The look of an outdoor kitchen is mostly its skin. Over the frame we apply natural or manufactured stone veneer, brick, or stucco β€” weather-rated and sealed β€” matched to or chosen to complement the house and patio.

A stone veneer outdoor kitchen reads as a permanent part of the home rather than a appliance parked on the patio, and the material is chosen to hold up to Houston sun and rain without fading or spalling. We veneer the island and any bar or accent walls to tie the whole setup to the house.

Countertops that survive Houston weather

An outdoor countertop takes sun, rain, heat off the grill, and the occasional freeze, so the material has to be built for it. Honed granite, porcelain or sintered stone, and sealed concrete all hold up outdoors; indoor-oriented materials like laminate and many tiles fail fast in the weather.

We set weather-appropriate countertops with the overhangs a bar or seating calls for and clean cutouts for the grill and any drop-in components. Done right, the counter is the surface you stop worrying about β€” it lives outside year-round.

Setting a drop-in grill and ventilation clearances

A built-in grill drops into the opening framed for it, and the clearances around it are a safety matter, not a detail. A built-in grill needs the manufacturer's required clearances to combustibles and proper ventilation built into the island β€” vents so that gas can't collect in an enclosed cavity, and insulated jackets where the grill's spec calls for them.

We build the opening and the island's ventilation to the specific grill's specifications and set the grill into it. The gas connection itself is a separate scope, covered below β€” what we do is make sure the grill is housed correctly and safely.

Outdoor bars and planning around the patio

Beyond the cooking island, we build outdoor bars β€” raised bar tops with seating overhangs, and standalone bar islands separate from the grill run. And a big part of a good outdoor kitchen is planning it around what's already there: the existing patio slab and whether it's large and sound enough, any pergola or cover overhead (grill ventilation under a cover needs real attention), and a sensible layout between grill, prep, and serving.

We design the kitchen to the patio you have rather than forcing a layout that doesn't fit the space.

Scope: gas, plumbing, and electrical are separate

This needs stating plainly so the project is planned right. We build the structure β€” the framing, the veneer, and the countertops β€” and we set the appliances, like a drop-in grill, into it. What we do not do is the gas, the plumbing, or the electrical: running a gas line to the grill, water and drain lines for a sink, and power for outlets or lighting are a separate scope we don't take on.

Those connections are made by the specialties that do that work. We build the island ready to receive them β€” with the chases, openings, and clearances in the right places β€” and coordinate so the structure and the connections fit together. What drives the cost of the build is the size and number of components, the veneer, the countertop material, and the appliances going in β€” drivers, not a price.

Frequently asked questions

Do you run the gas line and hook up the grill?

No. We build the island, set the drop-in grill into its opening to the required clearances, and leave it ready for connection. Gas, water, and electrical connections are a separate scope we don't take on, handled by the specialties that do that work.

What do you build an outdoor kitchen out of?

A non-combustible frame β€” steel studs or masonry block, not wood β€” with stone, brick, or stucco veneer and a weather-rated countertop. Everything is built to take Houston sun, rain, grill heat, and the occasional freeze.

What countertop survives outdoors in Houston?

Honed granite, porcelain or sintered stone, or sealed concrete. Indoor materials like laminate and many tiles fail quickly outside, so we use weather-appropriate stone set with the right overhangs and cutouts.

Can you build around my existing patio and pergola?

Yes. We design the island to your existing slab and any cover overhead, with particular attention to grill ventilation when the kitchen sits under a pergola or roof.

Do you build outdoor bars?

Yes β€” raised bar tops with seating overhangs and standalone bar islands, either as part of the kitchen or on their own.

Why do grill clearances matter?

A built-in grill needs the manufacturer's clearances to combustibles and ventilation in the island so gas can't collect β€” a safety requirement. We build the opening and the island's venting to the specific grill's spec.
