Concrete driveways

A concrete driveway is the biggest piece of flatwork on most homes and the one that takes the most abuse — vehicle weight, heat, and the clay moving underneath. Poured thin or on a weak base, it cracks and settles within a few years.

We pour driveways on a properly prepared and compacted base, at the thickness the load calls for, with control joints placed so the inevitable shrinkage cracking happens along the joints instead of randomly across the surface. The honest caveat for Houston: stamped concrete is still concrete, so it moves and cracks with the same clay soil as any slab — the base prep and joints matter just as much, and a crack shows more on a decorative surface. Done on a proper base it holds up well; sealing keeps the color and helps it shed water, and it's a maintenance item every few years in this climate.

Concrete repair, removal, and replacement

Not every slab needs replacing, and not every crack is a problem. Hairline shrinkage cracks are normal; the ones that matter are cracks that are lifting, separating, or creating a trip hazard, and slabs that have heaved or settled out of plane.

When a slab is broken up, heaved, or sinking, concrete removal and replacement is the honest answer — we break out and haul off the old concrete, fix the base that let it fail in the first place, and pour new. Replacing the slab without correcting the base just buys you the same failure again, so we address what moved underneath, not only the concrete on top.

Why Houston concrete cracks — base and joints

It's worth stating plainly because it's the whole game here. Expansive clay is the most active soil type for slab movement, and Houston is built on it. A slab poured on loose fill, uncompacted soil, or a base that holds water will move and crack no matter how good the concrete is.

Two things fight that: a properly prepared, compacted base that gives the slab uniform support, and control joints cut at the right spacing so the concrete cracks where you planned instead of where it wants to.
