A west-facing Houston patio is unusable from spring through fall without shade β the afternoon sun bakes it, fades everything on it, and drives everyone back inside. There's no single fix; the right one depends on the space, the exposure, and whether you want shade on demand or all the time. We install outdoor shade solutions across the Houston area β shade sails, retractable awnings, pergola covers, and solar screens β and help you choose what actually fits.
Shade sails and their anchor requirements
A shade sail β tensioned fabric stretched between anchor points β throws a lot of shade for the money and looks clean and modern. The part that makes or breaks it is the anchoring, because a properly tensioned sail pulls hard against its points.
That means real anchors: posts set in substantial concrete footings, or a structural attachment into the house framing β never fascia, soffit, or a surface that can't take the pull. An under-anchored sail sags into a hammock or rips its mount out of the wall. We size and set the anchors for the tension the sail will carry, which is most of the job and the step cheaper installs skip.
Retractable awnings
A retractable awning extends over a patio or a window for shade on demand and rolls back when you want the sun β or when a storm is coming, since retracting protects the awning from the wind that would otherwise tear it. They come manual-crank or motorized.
We mount the awning to the house or structure with proper backing to carry its load, because an awning cantilevers a lot of leverage off its mounts. On a motorized unit, the electrical hookup and wiring are a separate scope we don't take on β we mount the awning and set it up ready for that connection.
Pergola shade covers and canopies
If you already have a pergola, you likely have dappled light and not much real shade. We retrofit shade onto an existing pergola or patio cover: a retractable canopy on a wire or track system that slides across the top, slide-on shade cloth panels, or a solid or insulated cover added over the frame for full shade and rain protection.
It's the fastest way to turn a structure that looks good but doesn't block much sun into one that actually makes the patio usable in the afternoon.
Solar screens
Solar screens are exterior screen mesh fitted over windows and patio openings that stops a large share of the sun's heat and UV before it ever reaches the glass or the space behind it. On west- and south-facing exposures β the ones that cook in a Houston afternoon β they cut heat, glare, and fading noticeably while keeping much of the view and daylight.
They're a low-profile, high-value form of shade: no structure to build, just the right mesh on the openings taking the brunt of the sun. We install them on windows and on the openings of a covered patio.
Which option fits which situation
The right shade depends on the space and the exposure. A shade sail suits a modern look and big coverage where there's somewhere solid to anchor it. A retractable awning is for shade on demand off the house wall. A pergola cover upgrades a structure you already have. Solar screens are for windows and enclosed patio openings.
As a rule, a west-facing patio taking the full afternoon sun wants the most aggressive, fixed shade; a morning-sun patio can get away with less. We walk the space, look at the exposure, and recommend the option β or combination β that actually solves it rather than selling you the biggest one.
Built for Houston sun
Everything here is specified for intense sun, relentless UV, and the sudden wind and storms that come with Houston weather β fabrics and screens that don't chalk out in a single season, and anchoring built to hold. For a full structure rather than a shade add-on, see our pergola and patio cover page; for a roof with adjustable shade, our louvered pergola page; and to screen a porch in, our screen room page.
What drives the cost is the coverage area, the shade type, the anchoring or footings it needs, and whether anything is motorized β drivers, not a price.
Frequently asked questions
What shade works best for a west-facing patio?
The brutal afternoon sun usually calls for the most aggressive, fixed shade β a solid or louvered cover, a well-anchored shade sail, or solar screens on the openings. We match the solution to your exposure rather than defaulting to one thing.
Do shade sails need special anchoring?
Yes. A tensioned sail pulls hard, so it needs posts set in substantial concrete footings or a structural attachment into framing β never fascia or soffit. Under-anchored sails sag or tear their mounts out. Setting the anchors for the load is most of the job.
Do you wire a motorized awning?
No. The electrical hookup and wiring are a separate scope we don't take on. We mount the awning to proper backing and set it up ready for that connection.
Can you add shade to my existing pergola?
Yes β a retractable canopy on a track, slide-on shade cloth, or a solid cover added over the frame. It turns an open pergola with only dappled light into one that throws real shade.
What are solar screens and do they help?
Exterior screen mesh over windows and patio openings that blocks a large share of solar heat and UV before it reaches the glass or space β cutting heat, glare, and fading, especially on west and south exposures, while keeping much of the view.
Which shade option should I choose?
It depends on the space and exposure: a shade sail for big modern coverage, an awning for on-demand shade off the house, a pergola cover to upgrade an existing structure, and solar screens for windows and openings. We walk the space and recommend.
