Why fascia rot starts behind the gutter

The fascia is what your gutters hang on, which is exactly why it rots. When a gutter clogs, overflows, or is pitched wrong, water runs down the back of the gutter and onto the fascia board, where it sits against the wood. By the time the damage is visible from the ground, the board behind the gutter is often already gone.

That's why fascia and gutter repair go together. We replace the rotted fascia board and address the gutter that caused it — re-hanging or re-pitching it, or coordinating gutter work (see our gutter installation page) — so the new board doesn't rot the same way. Replacing the fascia without fixing the water is how you end up doing fascia board repair twice.

Soffit repair — rot and animal entry

Soffit fails two ways in Houston. The first is water rot, from the same roof overflow that takes the fascia. The second is animals: squirrels, rats, and birds find a gap or a soft spot in the soffit and use it to get into the attic — and once they're in, the hole stays open for the next one.

We replace rotted or animal-damaged soffit panels and close the entry points so the attic is sealed again. If something is actively living up there, wildlife removal should clear it first; then we handle the soffit replacement and seal the gaps. Either way, animal damage soffit repair is as much about closing the way in as replacing the panel.

Vented vs. solid soffit, and soffit vents

Soffit comes two ways: vented — perforated panels or vent strips that let the attic draw in air — and solid. Attic ventilation matters a lot in Houston's heat and humidity; the soffit vents are usually the intake that lets hot, damp attic air escape at the ridge. Block them or leave them out and you trap heat and moisture, which shortens the life of everything up there.

So when we replace soffit, we keep the ventilation right — matching vented panels where the attic needs intake and repairing damaged soffit vents rather than just closing the underside up solid. If your soffit is solid where it should breathe, we'll tell you.

Exterior trim and chimney chase trim repair

Trim is the rest of the exposed exterior woodwork — window and door casings, corner boards, frieze and band boards, rake trim along the gable, and the trim wrapping a chimney chase (the framed box around a metal-flue chimney). It rots from the same water that gets the fascia: roofline runoff, failed caulk, and paint that's given up.

We repair and replace exterior trim and chimney chase trim, cutting back to sound wood and matching the existing profile and reveal so the replacement reads with the rest of the house. Chase trim in particular tends to get ignored until it's soft, because it's up high and out of sight — it's the same fix as any other rotted trim. Fascia and soffit replacement that lasts

A lasting repair is more than a new board. We cut back to sound wood, replace with new lumber — or a rot-resistant material like fiber cement where it makes sense on a problem spot — back-prime and seal it, and flash and detail it so water sheds instead of soaking in.

On a single-story roofline that's straightforward ladder work; on a two-story house it's ladder or scaffold work done safely, and access is part of the job. Everything is matched to the existing profile and painted to blend, so the new fascia, soffit, or trim looks original rather than patched.
